Living Out Loud: Why Pride Still Matters After Five Decades

🌈 Happy Pride Month from all of us at Banter & Brawn! As June begins, we proudly raise our flags, our voices, and our hearts in celebration — and reflection.

The modern LGBTQ+ rights movement began in 1969, sparked by the Stonewall Riots in New York City. That act of resistance ignited a global movement for equality, visibility, and dignity. Now, over 50 years later, Pride Month continues to honor that legacy — with celebration, protest, and purpose.

Pride Through the Decades

Each decade has brought its own victories and challenges:

  • The 1980s saw a community devastated by the AIDS crisis, yet fiercely united in advocacy and love.

  • The 1990s and 2000s marked greater visibility, with shows like Will & Grace and landmark moments like marriage equality gaining traction.

  • The 2010s celebrated major legal wins — from the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to the nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage.

  • And now, in the 2020s, we’re facing a wave of new legislative challenges — especially against trans and nonbinary people — making Pride more essential than ever.

Why Pride Still Matters

In a time when anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and policies are resurging in parts of the country and world, being visible and unapologetically yourself is an act of courage. Every flag flown, every pronoun affirmed, every joyful kiss shared in public — it all matters. It tells young queer kids they are not alone. It reminds allies to speak up. It inspires everyone to live boldly and love fully.

Be Proud. Be Seen. Be You.

Pride Month is a time to honor how far we've come — and recommit to the work still ahead. It's about living out loud, celebrating who we are, and standing in solidarity with every letter of the LGBTQ+ family.

At Banter & Brawn, we believe pride isn’t just a month — it’s a lifestyle. Whether you’re new to the celebration or have been marching for decades, we invite you to wear your pride on your sleeve (literally!) and make every day a little brighter, bolder, and more loving.

🧡💛💚💙💜
Be fierce. Be seen. Be proud.
